Power topic #7016-3: Transfer switch set up for reliability and efficiency, part 3: ATS settings for best operation
By Gary Olson, Director, Power Systems Development
Many facilities that have generator sets (gensets) also have automatic transfer switch equipment (ATS) to
automatically start the generator set on a power failure and automatically switch the load from the utility to the
generator set and back again. To obtain the most reliable and efficient system operation, it’s important to
have the ATS properly set up so that it can sense power failure and operate in the best sequence for the system that
is installed and the equipment it supports. PT-7016 part three looks at ATS setting best practices and features
available on the equipment.

Digital controls — PowerCommand® digital control technology
Unlike other manufacturers, Cummins Power
Generation designs power system controls as a single
self–monitoring system, not as components in a larger
system. PowerCommand controls simultaneously can
operate the engine fuel system, directly control the
alternator excitation system and monitor up to 150
other nodes.
The interaction of the controls on a generator set and the
proper matching of control capabilities require a smart,
systems approach to control design. Our experience in
the design, production and application of engines and
alternators provides an unmatched level of expertise in
the proper design of power system control electronics.
