Power topic #7018: Evaluating cogeneration for your facility:
A look at the potential energy-efficiency, economic and environmental benefits.
By Joel Puncochar, Product Manager, Lean-Burn Gas Generator Sets
Cogeneration, also known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), is the on-site production of multiple types of energy
— usually electricity, heat and/or cooling — from a single source of fuel. Cogeneration often replaces the
traditional methods of acquiring energy, such as purchasing electricity from the power grid and separately burning
natural gas or oil in a furnace to produce heat or steam. While the traditional method of purchasing electric energy
from a utility is convenient, it is very inefficient and wastes almost 75 percent of the energy in the original fuel
due to production and transportation losses.

Case History: William Floyd School District — United States
William Floyd School District wanted to save money on high onpeak electric rates at their Shirley, New York campus.
Cummins Power Generation provided the school district with the most cost–effective, low maintenance and user–friendly
combined heat and power (CHP) solution to generate nearly all of the electricity, heat and cooling for the during the local
utility’s daily peak usage hours.

Cogeneration — Combined heat and power solutions
Cogeneration, also known as combined heat and power (CHP), can significantly reduce your energy consumption and
costs, increase power reliability, expand your facility’s capacity and minimize your greenhouse gas footprint.
Determining whether cogeneration is right for your facility begins by learning how your building uses energy.
Cummins Power Generation Inc. can help you evaluate every area of your building’s energy usage so you can decide
whether cogeneration should be a part of your energy management program.
Today, advances in diesel and lean-burn gas reciprocating engine technology, heat exchangers and systems controls
make cogeneration both a practical and economical energy management solution for applications as small as 30 kW.
