Power topic #7010: IBC Seismic Requirements and Transfer Switches
By Beth Kerr, Program Manager Power Electronics ATS
Includes a summary of the earthquake (seismic) provisions affecting power generation systems that are included in the International Building Code (IBC).
For designated building functions, the IBC can require that systems critical to life safety and fulfilling the buildings intended purpose remain online immediately after a seismic event. This can affect the backup and emergency system, requiring the system be certified compliant for the same seismic design category as the building.

Case History: Falcondo Nickel Mine - Dominican Republic
Rental Power keeps Dominican mine at full production during boiler maintenance with a temporary prime power system consisting of 32 2 MW trailerized Cummins Power Generation Rental Power units providing 64 MW of electricity
Historically, we simply reduced ferronickel production during the thermal plant maintenance, said Wanda Rosario, Falcondos senior buyer in charge of special projects. But the worldwide demand for ferronickel - which is a combination of iron and nickel used almost exclusively by the worldwide stainless steel industry - has become very strong. We decided it would be better to keep the mine working at full capacity by bringing in temporary Rental Power during the maintenance period.

Cummins Power Generation is firsttomarket with IBCcertified generator sets under 230 kW
Cummins Power Generation has become the first manufacturer to publicly announce International Building Code (IBC) certification on all its production generator sets under 230 kW. The certification will apply to products shipping from the factory starting in March, 2008. The IBC code, in various editions (IBC2000, 2003 and 2006), addresses both the design and installation of building systems with an emphasis on performance in emergency situations. The certification process is continuing on larger units and the companys goal is to have all generator sets certified by the end of 2008.
