CUMMINS POWER GENERATION SHOWS OFF
On November 8, Cummins Power Generation hosted a number of leading Egyptian
consultants and customers as part of its 4th UK Fly–in. The event was coordinated by
Ian Burton with Egyptian International Motors, distributor for Egypt, which also sent
several staff for the week-long visit.

Attendees of the 4th UK Fly-in tour Cummins facilities.
The visit began with a tour of Cummins Generator Technologies in Stamford, as well
as the Cummins Daventry engine plant. The trip concluded with two days at the Cummins
Power Generation head office at Manston, in Ramsgate, Kent. The two day final leg
featured presentations from a number of departments within Cummins Power Generation on
topics ranging from generator set ratings, sizing and Six Sigma. Participants were given
the opportunity to provide Voice of the Customer data for a project being run by Six
Sigma black belt Romain Mocaer.
Other participants included Elie Sleiman (Regional Support Manager – Power
Electronics), Tanguy Calvez (Product Manager – MR Mechanical Platforms), Julian
Carrasco (General Manager – Power Solutions Group) and Bob Patrick (Technical
Sales Support Specialist – Power Solutions Group). All participants regarded
the event as a success, a testament to the professionalism of our distributors and
the inherent interest in Cummins Power Generation. Plans are already in progress to
conduct smaller workshops with specific customers in the coming year.

In another step toward economic recovery and opportunity for Iraq, the Baghdad
International Fair opened its doors on November 1, for the first time since 2002.
Modern Iraq Company for Trading Agencies (MICTA), Cummins Power Generation
distributor for Iraq, participated in the fair.

CONNECTING THE IRAQI POPULATION WITH ASIACELL
 The C33-C38 kVA generator set
Asiacell, Iraq’s oldest and largest telecom provider, has been helping to
improve Iraqi infrastructure since it was established in 1999. Throughout various
social, economic and political upheavals, Asiacell has seen steady growth, and today
boasts six million subscribers.
In 2003, Asiacell was granted a two–year Global System for Mobile
communications (GSM) license for the six northern provinces of Iraq. In 2005, that
license was expanded to include the entire Iraqi republic, and in 2007 Asiacell was
granted a 15 year license for the entire country. In many provinces, they are now
the sole provider of telecommunications services.
Of course, all of this growth requires power. MICTA, distributor for Iraq, has
been working with Cummins Power Generation since 2005. They were a natural fit to
provide prime power for 8,000 communications towers in cities and remote towns alike.
To meet the need, Cummins Power Generation is installing 750 generator sets (models C15D5S,
C22D5S, C33D5S and C38D5S). The generator sets will feature the PCC1301 system control,
transfer switches and paralleling system, with the goal of providing uninterrupted power and
seamless service throughout Iraq.
MICTA is providing a complete power solution, handling the supply, installation and
commissioning for the project. The distributor will also provide maintenance throughout the
duration of the service contract.
CUMMINS POWER GENERATION PROVIDES CONTINUOUS POWER FOR HOSPITAL
As part of ‘Progress Health’ the Stamford and Peterborough Hospitals
Foundation Trust is building an acute hospital and mental health unit on the site of
the original Edith Cavell Hospital. They turned to Cummins UK, distributor for the
United Kingdom and Ireland, to provide a continuous, comprehensive power solution
for the 612 bed hospital, which will feature an emergency care centre, a high–tech
diagnostics unit, women and children’s unit, cancer unit, specialist
rehabilitation unit, renal dialysis and a multi-disciplinary training centre.

A C2250 diesel generator set helps provide continuous power to the hospital
In order to meet the needs of the customer, the Cummins Power Generation team worked
closely with the client and consultant to develop a package to meet the criteria of
this project. One main focus was getting the power system on line to take critical
building load within 15 seconds.
To accomplish this, the team supplied three C2250 diesel generator sets, capable
of providing 11kV each. The generator sets are capable of taking a 100 per cent load
transient and not stalling. The first generator set to go on–line is capable of
energising the whole 11kV ring while the other two generator sets synchronise.
STRONG RELATIONSHIPS HELP TO POWER KUWAIT
It takes strong relationships to grow a business, and it takes proven
capabilities to make strong relationships. GTE, Cummins Distributor for Kuwait,
demonstrated this in a large-scale project for the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity
and Water (MEW).
The MEW, which is responsible for providing power and water to consumers in a
variety of sectors, turned to Cummins Power Generation when it needed a standby
emergency power solution. To meet the ministry’s needs, MTE provided and
installed 33 generator sets, including 15 C2000D5, six C500D5, six C400D5, and
six C175D5 models. The generator sets are designed to deliver power in regions
with challenging terrains and high ambient temperatures. The mobile units
were containerised and trailer mounted for added convenience, with fuel tanks
incorporated under the trailers for easy mobility.
As is common throughout the Middle East, Kuwait experiences power outages when demand
reaches a critical point. This is the second year in a row that Cummins Power Generation
has won the contract to provide standby emergency power.
The first power plant in Kuwait was established in 1934 by National Power Company. The
government bought a stake in National Power Company in 1951, leading to the MEW’s
creation. The company now has 11,000 employees at 75 locations. With an ever increasing
demand for electricity and water supply throughout Kuwait, the MEW is sure to encounter an
even greater need for power generation solutions.
