CUMMINS POWER AT UNIVERSIADE
BELGRADE 2009

In July, the Serbian capital of Belgrade hosted the 25th annual World Student Games. From July 1 to July 12, the games featured more than 8,500 athletes from 145 countries. Large scale sports events require large scale preparations, and Cummins SerboMonte, Cummins Power Generation distributor for Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina, was able to meet the event‘s needs.

For this project, Cummins Power Generation delivered and installed eight standby generator sets, including the C180D5, C250D5, C300D5, C350D5, C400D5, and C550D5 models, to help build and update sports venues in the area, and to construct “Belville”, the University Village to house the athletes. The village is the largest residential project in all of Belgrade, covering 15 hectares and 16 buildings, for a total of nearly 250,000 square metres of living space. Belville also played host to officials and judges for the games.

The games themselves took place across 60 locations, each of which was designed to meet International University Sports Federation (FISU) standards. For this, the distributor provided four C500D5 generator sets, controlled by a MC150-4, which had already been installed.

The MC150-4 was located in Belgrade Arena, which has a seating capacity of up to 25,000. The arena has become a symbol of the new Belgrade, making the role of Cummins Power Generation all the more important to this rapidly changing region.

The games themselves were attended by Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, who officially opened the games. Cummins SerboMonte is proud to have played a role in such an important event, and to have met one of the most complex power generation challenges in the region to date.

CUMMINS POWER GENERATION
AND A PROJECT YEARS IN THE MAKING

For years, the largest gold mine in Egypt had been off-limits to mining companies. So when mineral exploration company Centamin Egypt Limited was granted a lease to mine on the massive Sukari Hill gold project, Cummins Power Generation distributor Egyptian International Motors (EIM) was delighted to provide a solution.

In order to help Centamin initiate the project, EIM installed six C2250 generator sets with 6 kV generators to run in parallel with three used 7 MVA MAC units from the Pharos company. EIM also supplied and installed several smaller generator sets to operate other key equipment located on the mine site.

Construction of the site was completed earlier in 2009, and is expected to deliver more than twelve-million ounces of gold. The Sukari Hill mine project is a testament to Cummins Power Generation’s versatility, and its stature as a worldwide leader in global power solutions.

GOOD FRIENDS AND GOOD BUSINESS IN SPAIN

Pamplona
The Running of the Bulls, in Pamplona, Spain

San Fermínes is known worldwide as a Spanish “fiesta”, a chance for people to enjoy good food, better wine and a friendly environment. In early July, Grupo Iryal, Cummins Power Generation distributor for northern Spain, held an event, which brought together Cummins Power Generation employees and several important customers.

The event, which took place on July 9-10, was a chance for the distributor and the company to discuss products and past successes with customers in the Health Care, Agricultural and Maintenance sectors. CPG were present and showcased the Pamplona Hospital generator installation.

On hand for the festivities were:

José María Redín, service manager for Navarra Hospitals, for whom Cummins Power Generation installed several generator sets in its Virgen del Camino hospital.

Víctor Susperregi, machinery manager for ALGEPOSA (Pasai Port). The company is responsible for all the machinery and new infrastructure developments at Pasai Port.

Ramón Isasi, representing Maq. Gaikor (Vitoria), maintenance rental and sales referral company in the area for mining. Our distributors work to keep contact with these companies on site to meet their new energy needs.

Fernando Alvarez and Iñaki Aurrekoetxea, representatives from Usargoiti company, which studies new agricultural developments and greenhouse technologies.

Mr. Jorge Santamarina, representative from Caja Navarra bank.

The event resulted in a potential opportunity to install further generator sets at Navarra hospital. With this event, Cummins Power Generation has proven that it can not only provide great solutions, but also to enjoy some fun moments after a job well done.

Cummins West Africa Limited (CWAL), Cummins Power Generation distributor in Nigeria, and has teamed with Leventis Power Systems to develop a generator set manufacturing facility in Lagos. It is a partnership built on a foundation of strength that promises to be part of a brighter tomorrow for Nigeria and the whole of the West African sub-region.

Recently, CWAL completed a power project for the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada, helping the University move from its temporary site to a permanent site along the Airport Road. Cummins Power Generation was awarded the contract to handle Campus-wide power generation for the new campus, as well as training and technical support for the project.

To execute the project parameters, Cummins West Africa supplied and installed two C2250 D5 and one C33 D5 diesel generator sets. They also provided 1MVA synchronisation switchgear, DMC 1000 control, spare parts and consumables.

Abuja selected Cummins Power Generation, citing better pricing, superior product quality and excellent technical support.

IN TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES,
A QUALITY PRODUCT SHINES

Cummins UK Display
Cummins UK display at the SED show

In the Spring of this year, Cummins UK, distributor for the United Kingdom, attended the Site Equipment Demonstration (SED) show at Rockingham Raceway in Corby. SED, which is in it’s 43rd year, is the only outdoor construction demonstration in the UK.

As usual, Cummins UK displayed a range of industrial application engines. For the first time at this show, the distributor demonstrated a range of generator set technology, including the C150 D5 and C38 D5 units, which generated strong interest in Cummins Power Generation.

The currect economic climate resulted in lower overall attendance in 2009 than 2008. However, the team was pleased with the number of good enquiries and sales leads the event generated. It remains important for Cummins Power Generation distributors to be active and visible in the industrial marketplace, an objective met by exhibiting at key industrial-market shows such as SED.
