This chapter discusses the importance of correct location of the transfer switch.
Transfer switches may be located in purpose-built enclosures or the mechanism and controls may be incorporated as part of a larger switchboard assembly. Local codes may determine the physical and electrical location of the transfer switch within the system.
A resume of the degree of protection afforded by enclosures to UL 1008 is given. For IEC enclosures reference should be made to standard IEC 60529.
Requirements and Recommendations:
- Transfer switches are provided ready-enclosed or in plate-mounted or component form suitable for mounting within an enclosure.
- Where transfer switches are provided for mounting in enclosures, these must be capable of resisting internal forces generated by the operation of the switch, together with forces generated under fault conditions.
- The enclosure must be of sufficient size to safely terminate wiring and incorporate adequate ventilation to allow heat produced by the transfer switch and its operating mechanism to dissipate.
- Ensure that the transfer switch is located away from the possibility of mechanical damage, heat sources and areas where contamination by moisture, dust or chemicals is possible.
- Transfer equipment should be located in areas accessible only by qualified personnel.
- To ensure maximum security of supplies, the transfer switch should not be located in the same room as either the service intake or generator.
- The standard transfer switch enclosure provides protection against accidental contact and from objects entering the enclosure. The enclosure also protects the operator from arcing and explosive forces that can develop under normal and especially under fault conditions.
